Return to Middle-earth: Kingdom Come Devs Announce Open-World Lord of the Rings RPG

Fantasy and RPG fans, brace yourselves. Warhorse Studios—the acclaimed developers behind the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series—has officially confirmed they are working on a brand-new, open-world Middle-earth RPG.

While details are heavily under wraps, the pedigree of the studio and the sheer scale of the intellectual property point toward this being one of the most ambitious fantasy gaming projects in years.

Why Warhorse Studios is the Perfect Fit

For years, Lord of the Rings games have generally leaned toward high-octane action (like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor) or cozy, smaller-scale experiences (like last year’s Tales of the Shire). We haven’t had a massive, historically grounded, gritty open-world RPG set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s universe.

That is exactly why Warhorse Studios is such an exciting choice for this project:

  • Unrivaled Immersion: Warhorse is famous for building deeply reactive worlds. In Kingdom Come, if you didn’t wash your clothes, NPCs reacted to your smell; if you drew your sword, people panicked. Bringing that level of detail to Middle-earth could give us the most lived-in version of the world we’ve ever seen.
  • Grounded, Tactical Combat: Known for their deep, directional, and brutal medieval melee combat, Warhorse could redefine how it feels to fight an Orc or a rogue bandit. Instead of feeling like an overpowered superhero, you might actually have to survive Middle-earth as a standard traveler, ranger, or soldier.
  • Rich Storytelling: They know how to handle complex political intrigue and deeply personal human stories, which fits perfectly with the dense lore of Tolkien’s universe.

What We Know (And What We Can Guess)

The studio’s official announcement explicitly describes the project as an “open world Middle-earth RPG” rather than strictly using The Lord of the Rings title template. This small naming nuance has sparked intense speculation among fans.

The Timeline Speculation

Because it’s labeled a “Middle-earth” RPG, there is a very strong chance the game won’t take place during Frodo’s exact quest to destroy the One Ring. Instead, Warhorse has thousands of years of lore to pull from. Fans are already theorizing about potential eras:

  • The Angmar War: The collapse of the northern kingdom of Arnor, where the Witch-king of Angmar decimated the land, leaving behind a fractured world perfect for an open-world setting.
  • The Kin-strife: A brutal Gondorian civil war filled with political betrayal, massive sieges, and fractured loyalties.
  • The Early Third Age: Roaming the wildlands as one of the early Northern Rangers, trying to protect remnants of civilization after the fall of Isildur.

“We are working on a new RPG set in Middle-earth. We have always been creating worlds full of stories that pull you in—and that’s exactly the kind of Middle-earth we will one day show you.”

A New Era for the Studio

This announcement marks a massive milestone for Warhorse. Alongside this Middle-earth title, they also confirmed that a new Kingdom Come adventure is in development to follow up on the commercial and critical success of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

While the developers warned that “a long journey lies ahead” and they will share more when the time is right, just knowing that the masterminds of gritty, immersive RPGs are holding the keys to Middle-earth is enough to keep our hype levels at an all-time high.
