Lost stanzas to: “Roads go ever ever on”

Roads go ever ever on
Over rock and under tree
By caves where never sun has shone
By streams that never find the sea
Over snow by winter sown
And through the merry flowers of June
Over grass and over stone
And under mountains in the moon

Original First Verse to Bilbo’s “Roads go ever on” in The Hobbit

Additional verses:

Roads go ever ever on
Under the mountains dark and deep
On paths dangerous to walk upon
Through passages where goblins keep
The treasures of their Goblin King
In chambers lit with fire-light
Filled with their plunder, while plotting
Their wicked plans in endless night.

Roads go ever ever on
To dragon hall carved into stone
Where dwarven lord and dwarven son
Fell in the fight. Each whitened bone
Lies covered in their feasting hall
With gold to make a dragon-bed
For sleeping wyrms, who wake and fall
With fire, and desolation spread.

Roads go ever ever on
To pathless forest, elven wood
Where good safety and peace is won
In fast strongholds that have withstood
Advancing evil down the years
Through generations of strong men.
Winter approaches. Autumn seres
The leaves. The seasons turn again.

Roads go ever ever on
To mountains tall and eyries high
To heights on which the starlight shone
That kiss the morn and evening sky
Where eagles nest and sail the wind -
Keep watch on all the lands below
For evil stirring. They will find
It out: eagles are first to know.

Roads go ever ever on
To hills of conflict, to the plain
Where armies fought, their battles won
Or lost and where the bodies slain
Of warg and goblin widely strewn
Blackened the earth for many a day
Till time and beast worked all their ruin
And all the dead crumbled away.

Roads go ever ever on
To places near and countries far
Where nations spread hither and yon
Where strange folk live, and every star
Is changed. And then another road
From countries far to places near
Returns: giving an eager goad
For travelers returning here.
