Imbuement Guide (U29)

With Update 28 en 29 there have been a lot of changes to the way of acquiring scrolls and crystals. The imbuement is still the same and the revamp is still a long time away. For this guide we’ll focus on keeping it compact and streamlined.

Step 1 Acquiring your base LI

In short you’ll want a Blemished symbol of the elder king (FA symbol) or a Unearthed “class” “weapon” of the first age for 50 Gift giver brands from any Roving threat barterer. With the FA symbol, 2 emerald shards and materials a crafter can make you your weapon. This will function as the start of your LI.

  • Hardly any difference between FA, SA or Third age. The suggestion is to go with a first age.
  • Passive bonuses are not worth redoing your LI’s for. 300 agility vs 60.000 at level 130.

For step 2 you’ll need 3-8 level 100 third ages to get the correct legacies you want.

Step 2 Choosing legacies for your LI

The most confusing and complex part is getting the correct legacies on your Unimbued LI. Normal weapons will be available, but at this time you will want an imbued weapon. Especially past level 120.

Before you press Imbue weapon you’ll want to have 6 out 7 legacies you’ll want on your final LI.

2.1 Finding your correct legacies

Find a source for the legacies you will want. This can be done from various places.

  • Inspect a friend you trust and copy those.
  • Use websites with guides such as https://lotrohq.com/builds/ or https://www.lotrobasics.com/
    • Raid focussed, but very decent screenshots for LI’s.
    • Basics may have sources for non-raid options and leveling
  • Forum, Youtube video guides or discords
Write down the legacies you see

Legacy names have different names before and after imbuement. Some are obvious while some are not. Examples

Before imbuePost-imbueComment
Bear form Damage (major)Bear form DamageEasy to notice
Grisly Cry Fear Duration (minor)Cry DamageEffect change

2.2 Getting your correct legacies

With a list of legacies and a fresh LI. This is the streamlined approach to imbuement (there are slight changes one can make, but this will be the easiest and quickest way to imbue).

  1. Identify your base LI and add item XP and reforge it till it’s level 60.
    1. You now should have a LI with 6 legacies take note of which you miss
    2. Remember you’ll need only 6 out of the 7 legacies you decided on in step 2.1
  2. Replace any legacies you don’t want with legacies you do want
    1. Start with any major legacies (you can see those on a lvl 1 TA)
    2. Replace minor legacies if you’re still not at 6 of 7 correct legacies
  3. You will have 1 *joker legacy after imbuement so if you’ve 6 out 7 legacies you are ready for imbuement
Getting third ages and legacies

All third ages drop on landscape or are put on the AH by some. Otherwise you can find them crafted, skirmish camp or melded.

Any major legacies can be seen on a third age without adding xp. Start off with a third age that has a major legacy you need on your imbue list. Add enough xp to get it to level 31. Deconstruct it and take out any legacy you need. Preferably a minor one (easier to get major legacy).

3 – Imbuement and best practices

Once you’ve imbued your LI you’ll want to add a few items to let it reach the full potential. First the few missing items you haven’t added in part 2.

3.1 – Crystal of remembrance and scroll of delving

Add a crystal of remembrance after imbuement to get a blank legacy. This legacy can be used to select any legacy from a dropdown menu. Choose the missing legacy you skipped out of before in step 2.

Add a scroll of delving to get an extra tier on all legacies (equalling 7 scrolls of empowerment). If added before imbuement you’d get 1 free scroll of empowerment.

3.2 Anfalas scrolls of empowerment and crystals

The scrolls will allow you to unlock extra maximum levels of skill legacies. Crystals will unlock extra dps, heal legacy (top one).  For where to get these see part 4.. The main thing to remember now is that these items unlock extra levels, the item xp actually fill the legacies. Each improvement needs 30.000 item xp. Your main focus should be Crystals above scrolls.

3.3 Item experience runes

Heritage runes or item xp come from quests, barterers and instances. If you plan to quest for the foreseeable future you don’t have to worry about getting extra runes. However if this is a new or extra LI while you’re level 130 you will want to find extra runes.

Sources for item xp

  • quest tokens – Nearly all quest tokens can be bartered for heritage runes
  • Quick instances – Halls of crafting, Grand stairs, DN are quick instances with lots of chest that contain 50-100k runes
  • Current dailies or missions – Running instances for weeklies will get you extra xp runes if run in a larger group size. Missions are a quick and easy source of repeatable item xp.

Quickly maximizing select legacies

Item xp is spread evenly across all possible legacies. You might want specific legacies to be maxed before others. Once imbued all legacies will be unlocked. But after that point you can selectively upgrade legacies.

Maximize the current xp before adding/unlocking extra legacy levels. This will allow you to unlock 1 specific legacy to it’s full potential at a time. Using the xp you get focussed on 1 legacy. Do be careful about wasting extra xp. If you use a 600k rune with only 30k needed the item will be fully consumed.

3.4 Gems, runes and settings

Every level jump since level 100 has added new types of gems, runes and settings to put in your LI beyond the previous Tier 1-10 items. Dont worry too much while leveling since each new type is far superior then the previous ones as the stats requirement has inflated.

One special type of rune is worth an extra mention Rune of striking, binding or enchantment boost your base damage/healing. At level 115 they only come from instances, but at level 120 and 130 they come in different qualities. Quest tokens, instance drops or raid drops. These add roughly 25% damage/healing compared to not having one slotted (at 130).

At a later stage there are crafted relics you can add. The latest ones from the Vale of the Anduin in combination with raids and instances drop from Skarhald. Pretty effective, but also quite expensive or hard to attain. Or for 5 elderslade supply packs from a crafting guild leader at 130.

3.5 Weapon titles and damage types

Nearly all enemies will have a higher mitigation to common damage then other variants such as Ancient dwarf or westernesse. But the one you’d want is Beierland. This has the least reflect from mob types or other adverse effects.

At this time you can choose any nice name or the cheapest option you’d want. Except for tactical class items that can get 5% light, fire or lightning damage on them. For a full list of all options visit this wiki page

However at 130 you can get new weapon titles (class items not available for 5 elderslade supply packs.

4 – Upgrading your legacies

You’ve chosen to upgrade your damage and skill legacies. This is usually done by either Star-lit Crystals for dps/healing or Scrolls of empowerment for skill legacies. Usually with Anfalas versions of these.

These can be gotten from game resources, instances or the store (quite expensive). We’ll focus on repeatable sources as you’ll need plenty of those.

With a recent change by SSG there is a larger focus on doing on-level content for these items if playing solo. With this alot of extra options have been added, but you do have to consider their maximum level. In general solo content awards items with a maximum level where group content awards (un)bound items that are free to use on any legacy.

4.1 Level locked items (solo content)

Quest tokens, unlocked daily quests, unlocked weekly quests and missions award scrolls with a max level range of 59 to 83.

4.2 Free use items (small group or instance content)

Most instances released since Level 120 have a chance to drop scrolls from the loot chests. The crystals can also drop from skirmishes and level scaled instances. These drop 1 by 1. below are the repeatable barter options.

4.3 Motes and ember option (level locked items)

While these barter options are level locked. These scrolls and crystals are the easiest and mass-produced items you will want to use. These come in two variations, but the higher levels are too expensive. You’re better off getting free-to-use items from 4.2.

AreaCostMax use levelReward
Motes/embers100741 scroll

5 Efficient farming

Each option will come at a time spent or a limit on how many times you can run them. Below you’ll find a list of the options to get the scrolls or crystals. What is the best is going to depend on your playstyle, grouping options or time to spend.

5.1 Motes farming

At 100 motes per scroll and 250 per crystal this the easiest way to get your first batch unlocks. Motes can come from nearly all content released after Mordor up to level 120. The higher the level and quality of gear the more motes it will give you.

Best – Kidzul kalah first boss farm

Doing this instance at level 120 7 times on Tier 1 + 2 +3 +1 +2 +3 +1 will awards you on average 2000 motes and 7 drops of IXP, scrolls/crystals.

Other options are Abyss of mordath, Glimmerdeep or Anvil of Winterstith. Other instances award motes, but in far inferior quantities.

LP alts with 3 or 7 year anniversary boxes can open level 20 lootboxes with the free keys awarded from the boxes. Besides other rewards these will also give you motes.

5.2 Ember farming

At 100 embers per scroll and 250 per crystal for the lower end versions these are a good source. The higher legacies come at too great a cost. use the other sources for the last unlocks. All embers come from max level activities and are also used to barter the second best gear. Still it can be easier to get embers then motes.

Best instance- Stairs Elderslade

Available in daily T1 or weekly higher tiers. All loot can be ashed for 100 or 200 embers a piece.

Other instances

Higher tier Minas Morgul, Remorchant or Threshold, Chambers  or new U29 instances Available in weekly these instances gear can ashed for 100 or 200 embers. More time consuming, but available if you run them for other rewards.

Level 130 Weeklies

All available weeklies award embers on top of other useful items. You will need to unlock these weeklies by either doing the quests deeds or be kindred with the factions

WeeklyEmbersOther rewards

100 Imlad Sigils 500VXP, 70 tokens, 1 shard

5.3 Missions

With update 29 missions have become a decent option. Besides the motes you will now be awarded multiple boxes. Weekly quests will give you the choice of 3 scrolls and 1 crystal. With the new options you can choose either a crafting box (1 Ithilharn Shard) or legendary box with 3 scrolls.

These new boxes and weeklies are now also awarded to any lower level. Getting double use of your lower level characters leveling can be quite efficient

5.4 Ancient Ithil Coins

Throne of the dread terror bosses and challenges award you with Ancient ithil coins. With a group size of 6 you can get 10 easily from 1st boss Rakothas or if you venture further in even more. Mumaks (boss 2) and Vadokar (3rd boss) are usually done as well by groups of 130’s. Bosses 4 to 6 are usually skipped due time investment. You can also choose to go in smaller groups and earn more coins.

6 Suggested route

How you spend your time or what options you have available is up to you. If it’s your first character focus, you got an army of alts waiting for Rakothas or got 1 really good geared character raiding the suggested route can be a mix of all above.

First character

Minas Tirith dailies, some big battles and continue enjoying the game. Mix in some instances and use your motes to upgrade you LI. If you’ve imbued correctly you’re normally fine up to level 120. After this you’ll want to first upgrade your DPS legacy with crystals

One main character

Same as your first character, but you can start using embers, Mote farming, missions and any weeklies you may have unlocked. Throne is a great option. Embers are usually best used if you’re 130, but planning on doing any higher tier instances soon.

Funding a second weapon or character

Do your normal activities you’d do, but siphon off gold earned and embers for extra scrolls. Kidzul kala 7*, Rakothas and Weeklies on your main. Stairs T1 daily on alts for extra embers.

A lot of extra characters or raiding

Perhaps you’re raiding alot or have done a ton of Minas Morgul questing. Leverage those locks and extra crafting boxes you get. Gold is your best friend as well. Having another char ready to go can be worth more than a small upgrade to 1 in the long run.

7 Replacing legacies or new LI’s

Some time has passed and a few patches have changed your class skills. That 200 vitality that was good for your runekeeper is now better served with a new lightning skill. It’s possible to replace single legacies without throwing out your entire LI.

Imbued legacy replacement scrolls

This item will allow you to replace 1 legacy with the same drop down choice menu as the crystal of remembrance gave you. It will retain all the unlocks from the replaced legacy, but will need the item xp added again.

These items are hard to come by (7 quest chains) and only have 1 repeatable source ingame (Rakothas and Throne raid). However it’s usually cheaper to replace 1 or 2 legacies then completely redo a LI.

Remaking a new LI

Of Course there are exceptions to the rules. If you haven’t added any scrolls to an LI and need to replace 4-5 legacies it’s going to be easier to start from scratch. It’s not often, but for some cases its the preferred method.

1 legacy replacement scroll equals 5 crystals or 10 scrolls (which both got alternative sources then Ancient ithil coins or single quest rewards). It might be wise to spend the time to create a new LI.

8 – Final note and revamp

There are parts that this guide hasn’t touched up on such as using multiple LI,  a normal weapon or no-imbued LI’s. These will come into play at the far top end of gameplay. However for standard use 1 correct LI will be enough.

Legendary item revamp (soon ‘tm)

The request to change the way LI works has been asked for since the dawn of men. Don’t stop upgrading your LI just yet cause at this time it’s more a whenever. While slated for a perhaps End of 2020, it has turned into a very unlikely 2021 with just a small mention in this year’s Producers letter.

“ For Legendary Items, our focus this year will be to speed up LI leveling for players not at end-game and make our newer regions more appealing for people working on their items.”
