Amazon Cancels Major Lord of the Rings MMO Project

The journey into Middle-earth has abruptly ended for Amazon Games, as reports confirm the cancellation of their massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved universe. This marks the second time the tech giant has failed to bring a Lord of the Rings MMO to fruition, stemming from a significant corporate pivot and mass layoffs within Amazon Game Studios.

Here’s a look at what led to the cancellation and what it signals for Amazon’s future in AAA game development.

The Second Attempt Comes to an End

The recently canceled project, which had been in development by Amazon Games Orange County (the studio behind New World), was announced in 2023 in partnership with the Embracer Group, the current holders of the game rights for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

Few concrete details about the game were ever released. Amazon Games leadership had previously noted that they were still in the early stages, trying to “find the hook” that would differentiate it from other successful fantasy titles. It was intended to be a persistent open-world adventure spanning the events of the core books.

The cancellation was confirmed by a former senior gameplay engineer who was part of a major wave of layoffs affecting Amazon Games, indicating the project was an early casualty of the corporate restructuring.

Why Was the Project Canceled?

Unlike the first canceled Lord of the Rings MMO in 2021, which was reportedly halted due to a contractual dispute with Tencent after they acquired co-developer Leyou, this second cancellation appears to be entirely internal and strategic.

The core reasons are tied to Amazon’s new strategic direction:

1. The Pivot Away from MMOs

The cancellation is part of a broader, company-wide decision to significantly scale back first-party AAA game development, specifically centered on the MMO genre. In a statement regarding the mass layoffs, Amazon leadership indicated a strategic shift to deliver “the very best gaming experiences… while leaning into the things that Amazon does best,” suggesting that the massive, long-term commitment required by the MMO model no longer aligns with their immediate goals.

This pivot has also impacted their existing MMORPG, New World, which is reportedly ceasing new content updates and will transition into maintenance mode, with servers remaining live through 2026.

2. Large-Scale Layoffs and Restructuring

The announcement of the game’s demise coincided with mass layoffs across various Amazon divisions, including Amazon Game Studios and Twitch. Large-scale corporate restructuring and a focus on cost-efficiency often lead to the cancellation of ambitious, expensive, and long-term development projects that are still in early, pre-revenue stages—a description that perfectly fits the Lord of the Rings MMO.

3. Development Challenges

While the game was officially in the “fledgling” stages, the sheer scale of adapting Middle-earth into a successful MMO is immense. Amazon executives themselves admitted they were still seeking a defining creative direction. The massive investment required, coupled with the highly competitive nature of the MMO market (dominated by established titans like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV), made it a difficult proposition even before the strategic shift.

A Separate Path for Middle-earth Content

It is important to note that this cancellation does not impact Amazon’s other major investment in the Tolkien IP: the Prime Video series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. That series, currently in production for its third season, is entirely separate from Amazon Games and remains a core priority for the company.

The cancellation of Amazon’s second attempt closes a speculative chapter for many fans who hoped to see a modern, high-budget take on Middle-earth. It confirms that even with massive resources and a legendary IP, success in the ever-evolving world of AAA game development is never guaranteed.
