The Lord of the Rings Online™ can be a little overwhelming or confusing at first, especially in regards to the Free to Play model adopted in September of 2010. So Branick, Mysteri, Rolfkrage, and Pineleaf are here to answer your account-related questions in what we hope will be the first of an annual series of New Player guides. Our goal is to record updated versions of these guides every year in order to consolidate the most important information new players will need right away. Thanks for listening.

Something not mentioned is that as non-VIP, you can only play the Reaver monster class for free. The others are unlocked by buying them in the lotro store or you can rent access by subbing. Like the free peoples, trait slots on monsters are also locked. Therefore, it’s a good idea to make one of each monster class while VIP. You will have to unlock them if you un-sub, but they will have their trait slots unlocked when you do.
If you’re looking for quick TP and have a thousands of skirmish marks on your main, buy rep items. They’re available from the Curiosities vendor and give 700 reputation with a given faction. If you rank a character from neutral to kindred, that’s 50 TP per faction for a few minutes of clicking. Obviously not something you can do right away, but it’s not a bad strategy later on.
Alternatively, while deeding/questing, just keep all the rep items.

Thank you for tip about the Barter Wallet. I have been VIP for a while, but didn’t know about this. All of a sudden, I have an extra 15-20 storage slots on my high level characters. Woo-Hoo!
I wasn’t all the way through the episode when I posted the previous comment, but one point about the barter wallet wasn’t quite accurate. Festival items go to your regular wallet already, you don’t need the Barter Wallet upgrade for that (I think that came in with U10).
Regarding the store purchases worth spending TP on, today I won a Universal Toolkit as a Gold Hobbit Present. I was really surprised how good this item is: +20% Critical Chance to all crafting professions (it doesn’t stack with eg. Jeweller’s Journal, but you get 25% base crit chance), no need to carry separate tools so it frees up one or two bag slots and -3 seconds harvesting duration too! I later found out this item is also available as a purchase for 150 TP. It seems really good for the price.
