New Player Question

Glambold sent in this week’s question:

What game options do you turn on for different classes i.e. Combat Assistance for Melee characters?

Week In Gaming

Celebathien

  • Khelevorn continues chasing max tier 59 scrolls in Minas Tirith. And his last two legacies for the bow. We don’t talk about the sword.
  • The Academy may or may not have startled a random player in Moria by appearing one at a time from a campfire all at once around him/her.
  • Had to buy and use tortoise stones for Khelevorn and Morchandir so they wouldn’t level cap before getting out of Rohan and the Lone-lands, respectively, given they have to keep running dailies and missions for LI stuff.

Gwaerendes

  • I completed weeklies on Gwaer for Minas Morgul and Hultvis. I saw more players in the Hultvis instances than I did when I quested through on level. I foresee competition for mobs after Monday.
  • I levelled a Stamina Nightblade to level 24, and honestly, it’s mostly been from crafting and sneaking around the landscape clearing out surveys and treasure maps. I’m having fun, though.
  • Two other characters in ESO have made it to level 19 and level 15. They are actually doing real questing, in two different Alliances – AWKWARD.

Sanswinda

  • Was chased by a floating axe through the Elderslade battlegrounds, as I finished helping the Beornings.
  • I started learning about Midyear Mayhem in ESO and was promptly killed. I may or may not get the hang of it.
  • Was introduced to Slime Rancher by my nephew and spent some time playing our different games simultaneously. The crystal boom slimes are dangerous, but cool.

Teriadwyn

  • Teriadwyn finished helping stupid bears and unlocked dailies for the new area. Joy.
  • Terifluffz got enough commendations for Audacity level 22!
  • Arkenstone RK gave up on LIs (at least for now) and ended up taking an unplanned leap thanks to lag.
  • Spent some time in ESO remembering how much I kind of really suck. Also, fishing.
  • Lots of Civ with little result, but I did beat the Alexander scenario on the Settler difficulty.
  • Updated SWTOR and took out one of my Jedi Sages for a little bit.

Pineleaf

  • My Anor warden helped Jajax reunite with his brother and deal with three more captains
  • Joined the LOTRO Players group in Civ VI as I led Greece in an isolated part of the map
  • I led Vietnam through the first 20% of its rise as a civilization and learned that multiple continents aren’t necessarily great on a two-player map.

Hey all,

I’m a long-time listener to the show and would like to offer a different perspective on the LI grind.

I’ve been playing Lotro for 4 years now, and still love the game – the storylines, the views, the versatility in different classes and so on.

I have never done more Minas Tirith than I have to in order to get my two trait points – as I feel there is more challenging content ahead. So no MT dailies for me.

Up until Vales of Anduin my experience is that the quest rewards (and non-buffed LI:s) can take me through the content without any big issues.

I now have 4 alts at 130: Mini, LM, hunter and burg. None of them aria:ed. Three of them solo only.

As in, all of them have actually played the content. All but the burg have also died a lot.

All of them have unlocked Minas Morgul weeklies, where about 30min of gameplay distributed over 3 days gives 2000 embers, 3 ithilharn  shards and a good chunk of virtue XP. Per character. Plus more rep clickies and sigils that I can use. (Only the scourges require a group, and at least on Arkenstone LFF provides what you need).

So: 20x max 74 scrolls/week and character. For 30-ish min of gameplay.

Three of then have done Floodfeels and have unlocked the weekly bounties – another chunk of virtue XP and 300 motes per character.

That is another 3x max 74 scrolls – now we have more than needed to “max 74” one legacy per LI.

Also important: from Limlok barter currency I can supply my next-in-line with perfectly useable 130 gear, both clothes and jewellery. Bound to account, so even reusable. Provided you actually play the content and get the barter currency.

Only one of my alts has done Elderslade, so from the mission dailies/weeklies I “only” get 500 embers and 3 max 74 scrolls or a max whatever starlit.

Here comes the kicker: the stair battle (130 only).

Easy to get to: take the dwarf goat from Thorin’s hall to Annak-khurfu, get out of the halls, check the wiki on where to go and ride to the stair for discovery (in your Floodfells gear).

Then do stairs t1 daily. It takes maybe 10min and gives on average 500 embers (after you have equipped what you need) plus the occasional Anfalas Scroll.

Look for calls in LFF or put out a call yourself – no one checks your stats for t1 so don’t be shy.

A daily stair gives (on average) 3500 embers per week, aka 35x max 74 scrolls. Per character.

As all drops in Stairs are fellowship tradeable you can even help a friend. Said friend do need to (you guessed it) play the game and do the Stairs instance together with you, for you to be able to help them. If they do they get on average 1000 embers/10 min in disenchantable drops (yours, and theirs).

I mean. I actually think it is easy to get my LIs up to 74, which Is a decent level. Not top notch, but enough to kill things before they kill you.

As for the non-nerfed scrolls.. FI school every 6th week, on all and every character that can get through it. Slower grind, definitely, but far from impossible. And it’s a very quick run.

And the starlits… I have still to learn Rako/Throne, and until then I am limited to festivals and beer runs. But Rako/Throne are always there, if I decide to play the game instead of waiting for festivals.

Lastly: a side note, as I have heard complaints about the cost of the Elderslade expansion.

It is available for $20. I have no idea what a cinema ticket costs in the US, but who can go to the cinema anyway, pandemic and all? And how many hours of fun/challenge do you get for a cinema ticket compared to an expansion like Elderslade?

Those that complain that Elderslade is a small area have probably not done the War Zone (that one really put your skills to the test).

In Sweden we have a saying; “if you don’t vote… you are not allowed to complain”.

I would like to adapt it a bit: “If you don’t play the content once… you are not allowed to complain”.

So to all Lotro Players out there… just play the game!

The first character to 130 is hard, but how fun would it be if there were no challenges?

And once you have one at 130 (that has actually done the content) everything gets easier.

Kindly,

Bella on Arkenstone
