Free Range Games Unearths an Oct. 24 Release Date for The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria™ on PlayStation®5 and Windows PC

Independent developer Free Range Games and publisher North Beach Games today announced the release date for their highly anticipated co-op survival crafting title, The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, which will welcome Dwarves into the storied mines on Oct. 24 with a digital release for the PlayStation®5 computer entertainment system and Windows PC version via the Epic Games Store. Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria Coming This Fall

Lord of the Rings is back with a new story focused on the Dwarves narrated by the brilliant John Rhys-Davis (Whom you will know from the movies) The title is based on the ending of The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, when Middle-earth enters its Fourth Age.

The game follows the dwarf Gimli as he returns with the dwarves to the mines of Moria after the events of the trilogy are over. In that sense, this game represents new lore in the Tolkien universe.

It’s the only survival crafting video game set in the Fourth Age of Middle-earth.

Set in a procedurally generated Dwarven realm of Moria, no two adventures will be alike, and every expedition is traversable either solo or online with companions. Players can mine to craft greater gear and resources, but beware mining makes noise, and noise created in the quiet deep threatens to awaken the dangers below: where there’s clatter, there’s combat. Excavate the mysteries of three legendary mountains, extract precious metals, scrape to survive, and battle unspeakable forces to learn the secret of the Shadow that lurks within. If you remember, this is where the Orcs and the dreaded Balrog chased and fought with the Fellowship of the Ring.

To survive the treacherous Mines of Moria players must conserve resources, hunt, and gather for food and manage their sleep, temperature, and noise levels. Utilize dynamic light systems for safety and to blaze a path further into the darkness. Battle unspeakable evils and survive hordes of monstrous Orcs in visceral combat, while uncovering the secret of the Shadow that looms within the mountain.

Players will also have to find solace from the darkness. Reveal and clear new locations to create architecture on a grand scale. Get creative and construct bases from scratch or build upon the existing environment.

Players will have to try to restore the long-lost ancient kingdom of Khazad-dûm to its former glory, recovering Dwarven landmarks as the story progresses. They can resurrect old mines and refire their forges to yield their untouched resources.

And they can explore the depths of the Mines of Moria. The procedurally generated environments are abundant with resources and fraught with mystery and danger, providing a unique experience each and every time.

Players can adventure alone or band together with friends in online cooperative multiplayer with up to eight players. And they can craft legendary Dwarven armor, tools, weapons and structures. They can rebuild ancient forges to strengthen, repair and enchant gear. And they can upgrade and unlock new technologies and fantastical machines. Amazon Cancels Lord of the Rings Game

Announced two years ago, it looks like Amazon Game Studios, has put the brakes on the upcoming LOTR MMORPG.

According to Bloomberg this project is now dead. The contract negotiations between Amazon and Tencent were said to have caused a dispute that eventually led to the game’s cancellation.

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that after Tencent’s acquisition of Leyou, “we have been unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time.”

The Amazon team working on the game will be moved to other projects. “We love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers,” the spokesperson for the Seattle-based company said in a statement.

Amazon Is Help Making That New Lord of the Rings MMO

 

Remember that new F2P LOTR MMO that was being made we told you about??

 

 

Turns out there is a big name behind it as well as Leyou Technologies. Amazon Game Studios is also behind the game.

There’s no word yet on a story or setting. Amazon Game Studios VP Christoph Hartmann said in a statement,

 

“Tolkien’s Middle-earth is one of the richest fictional worlds in history, and it gives our team of experienced MMO developers — from the same studio developing New World — tremendous opportunity to play and create.”

 

Amazon Game Studios and Leyou will jointly develop the game for PC and consoles, and Amazon Game Studios will market and publish the title globally with the exception of China, which will be managed by Leyou. The collaboration brings together Amazon’s game technology and talented MMO developers, and Leyou’s expertise in designing free-to-play games and operating live-service games.

 

I reached out to Amazon PR to ask if there will be a connection to the game and TV show that Amazon is also working on, There will NO connections to  game and the Lord of the Rings TV show.
