The War of the Rohirrim: A New Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game Box Set

Games Workshop has unveiled the highly anticipated starter set for the new edition of the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game. This popular wargame, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic Middle-earth universe, is set to receive a fresh update.

The new box set, titled “The War of the Rohirrim – Battle of Edoras,” pits the noble horsemen of Rohan against the marauding Dunlending hill tribes. This epic clash ties in with an upcoming new Lord of the Rings anime series.

For those unfamiliar with the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game, it’s a miniature wargame similar to Warhammer. Players use models based on the characters from the Peter Jackson films or original designs approved by the Tolkien estate. This game has been around under various names since 2001, and Games Workshop recently announced the release of a new edition.

The “The War of the Rohirrim – Battle of Edoras” box set contains an impressive array of miniatures:

Rohan: Haleth, Prince of Rohan (mounted and on foot), Háma, Prince of Rohan (mounted and on foot), 24 Warriors of Rohan
Dunlendings: Wulf, leader of the Dunlendings (mounted and on foot), General Targg (mounted and on foot), 24 Hill Tribesmen

In addition to the miniatures, the box includes a 176-page rules manual, a 48-page booklet with unit profiles and scenarios, 2 plastic model Rohan Houses, dice, a themed range ruler, a double-sided play mat, and a quick reference guide.

This new starter set offers fans of the Lord of the Rings universe a thrilling opportunity to recreate iconic battles and create their own epic adventures in Middle-earth.

The Harnkegger Games VII starts today!

You may have noticed throngs of dwarves running up and down the stairs of Thorin’s Hall in the past weeks, perhaps hobbits frantically memorizing their poems, or Elves swimming in the Brandwine for that matter. All rather unusual things to say the least, but not when you realize The Harnkegger Games are once again upon us!

The Harnkegger Games (LoTRO’s player-run Olympic-style week-long event) is back for its seventh year running. Hence, all of Laurelin is utterly alight with activity in preparation for the games STARTING TODAY, eager and excited to kick off the events at 2PM Servertime (7UK/8CET). Like every year The Harnkegger Games Committee on Laurelin (consisting of members from Durin’s Folk, The Blue Mountains Regiment, and The Shire Angling Club) get together and host a full week of crazy, exciting and hilarious games, this year running from Monday 24th till Sunday 30th of September.

Hop on to Laurelin (open to anyone with a character out of the starter zone), compete and earn yourself massive amounts of gold (3500 gold to be won!), plenty of sturdy steel keys and a hoard of LOTRO Points (a whopping 13.000 again this year!) Oh and eternal bragging rights of course… well, until next year, of course.
Will the Elves defend their first Nation title successfully? Or will the Dwarves valiantly claim back their title? Perhaps the men can jump out of the shadows and make that Nation title theirs? And let’s not forget those hobbits! Don’t miss a minute of this year’s exciting Harnkegger Games via LoTRO’s very own twitch channel, where community manager Cordovan and the LoTRO stream team will be covering every game day LIVE.

The opening concert, is once again provided by the beardelicious dwarf band “The Rolling Kegs” , kicking off this year’s Harnkegger Games in front of the doors of Thorin’s Halls on Laurelin.

The adventure awaits, join us!

New F2P Middle-earth MMORPG Coming Soon For Console And PC

A new Middle-earth MMORPG is coming to PC and consoles, even though Lord of the Rings Online is still alive and well, The new Lord Of The Rings MMO was announced by Leyou Technologies and will be published and partially developed by Athlon Games.  Athlon will not be the sole developer of the project as it will also be working in tandem with a currently unknown partner developer. The project aims to “to create an engrossing new AAA experience” set in the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien. The press release adds that players will explore “lands, people and creatures never seen before by fans of the Tolkien universe.”

Additionally, the game will be set prior to the events of the famous novel series. The press release also hints at what the MMO’s business plan will be. It notes that both Leyou Technologies and Athlon Games have a “deep expertise with free-to-play game design and service” suggesting a free-to-play model for the AAA online game. While waiting for its release, one can pass the time on other options such as those on guild games.

Details are slim to none at this point, but Dave Miller Presiden Of Athlon Games Said

“It’s a singular opportunity to work closely with Middle-earth Enterprises to create a completely new experience for fans of the landmark fantasy work of J.R.R. Tolkien, and we are excited about the resurgence of interest in The Lord of the Rings IP, This, along with several other major properties Athlon is working with, will help us to further our goal of creating AAA cooperative console and PC experiences that gamers will want to play for years to come.”

Fredrica Drotos, Chief Brand & Licensing Officer at Middle-earth Enterprises adds

“We are extremely pleased to work with Athlon Games to create a new, immersive game experience, exploring epic regions in Middle-earth during the years leading to the events of The Lord of the Rings, Athlon’s game will allow millions of Middle-earth fans throughout the world a unique opportunity for fellowship and epic exploration.”

If you haven’t heard of Athlon before, that’s because it’s a new subsidiary of Chinese publisher Leyou Technologies, the company that owns Warframe developer Digital Extremes as well as Splash Damage, the studio that most recently worked on the multiplayer for Gears of War 4. The Lord of the Rings will be Athlon’s first big project.

More news as we get it, I’ve also reached out to Standing Stone Game for any comments or statements they might wish to share, I’ll update this as soon as I hear back.
Story developing.

Games Workshop Releasing The Lord Of The Rings: Quest to Mount Doom Board Game

Games Workshop is going to task players to find the One Ring later this fall, with a new board game The Lord Of The Rings: Quest To Mount Doom.

Players take the role of members of the Fellowship, each with their own unique abilities, hunting for the One Ring hidden somewhere in Middle-earth. The catch is that, while players still want to take the ring to Mount Doom to destroy it, the player who finds it tries to keep it secret, lest someone else finds out about it and steals it. Players use a wide array of time and event cards to find the ring, or stop opponents from finding it. Plus there is the Eye of Sauron to worry about.

The box includes a game board, 9 plastic Fellowship of the Ring Figures, 1 Die, 40 item cards, 35 event cards, 42 Eye of Sauron cards, 9 character cards, an Eye of Sauron, and an instruction book. The game is for 2 – 5 players, ages 8 and up, and plays in 30 – 45 minutes. MSRP was not announced.
