A Grail Game Returns: Restoration Games and Space Cowboys Announce The Lord of the Rings™: The King’s Gambit

The tabletop world just felt a tremor in the Force—or rather, a shift in the foundations of Middle-earth. Today, in a monumental partnership, Restoration Games and Space Cowboys officially announced they are joining forces to revive one of the most sought-after “grail games” in history: The Queen’s Gambit.

But this isn’t just a reprint. Reimagined for a new generation, the legendary system is being transported to the Third Age in the upcoming epic, The Lord of the Rings: The King’s Gambit.

A “Twist of Fate” Collaboration

The story behind the game’s development is almost as cinematic as the source material. According to Justin D. Jacobson, owner of Restoration Games, The Queen’s Gambit was the very first title he wanted to bring back when he founded the company.

In what he describes as an “unbelievable twist of fate,” Restoration Games reached out to Middle-earth Enterprises at the exact same time that Space Cowboys approached legendary designer Rob Daviau (who worked on the original Hasbro version) with the same idea. Instead of competing, the two powerhouses decided to collaborate to create the ultimate Tolkien tabletop experience.

One Game, Four Battlefronts

True to the sprawling nature of the original 1999 classic, The King’s Gambit features an epic battle across multiple fields of play simultaneously. Players will have to manage their attention across four distinct theaters of war:

  • The Pelennor Fields: Watch the Riders of Rohan clash against endless hordes of Orcs.
  • Minas Tirith: Command the brave Gondorians as they fend off the forces of Shadow within the White City.
  • The Great Port at Pelargir: Guide Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas as they maneuver through Haradrim to join the fray.
  • The Path to Mount Doom: In the most high-stakes “mini-game” of all, Frodo and Sam must navigate the perils of Mordor to reach the fires of Orodruin.

“We knew we needed an epic license to match the original, and The Lord of the Rings was right at the top of our list.” — Justin D. Jacobson, Restoration Games

Two Ways to Play: Deluxe vs. Retail

This partnership introduces a unique dual-release strategy to ensure both collectors and casual gamers can get their hands on a copy.

Looking Ahead

With Rob Daviau at the helm, The King’s Gambit promises to honor the legacy of its predecessor while tightening the mechanics for modern sensibilities. It’s a game of “thrilling decisions and countless ways to win,” designed to be the definitive Lord of the Rings strategy experience.

As Vincent Goyat of Space Cowboys put it, the goal was to take a legendary system and give it the “epic canvas” it deserves. Based on today’s announcement, they’ve done exactly that.
