Great show as always. I would like to make a comment about the Arkenstone. I believe in the Hobbit it says the dwarves found the AS and shaped and formed it to reflect light. In fact, there are no special powers about it except for the fact that it has a inner light. While the Simiral was a very powerful holy relic forged by Feanor. The dwarves would have never tried to modify this jewel, but I don’t think they could have anyway. I think all of the dwarves troubles caused by the treasure hoard were more from the effect of the dragon.
I think I like the story much better with it being just a really nice looking item in their treasure hoard. It speaks much more about the dwarves and their character.
When I first came across the article I was very taken by the speculation, practically its nigh on impossible for it to be the third silmaril, but it sure is an appealing conspiracy theory.
The Silmaril was lost in the depths of the earth. They were described as being harder than adaments (diamonds) and as such they also likely had a higher melting point. It may be that they would have endured the heat of molten lava, but extremely unlikely that plate tectonics could have thrust it thousands of miles beneath middle earths crust to exactly under Erebor. In a relatively small time, but i guess this could have been expedited by the will of Eru, his purpose in this would have to be rather strange though.
The dwarves shaping the stone could have been merely polishing off the rock it was found in though. I haven’t read the text describing it, is it explicit in the description? The light coming from the stone, is the slither of hope for it to be a silmaril. IF it was one, IF, it would have been beyond the dwarves to realise.
Very few in middle earth would still endure to recognise one, for instance Galadriel, or the son of Earendil, Elrond. As we only experience the description of the arkenstone from the perspective of the dwarves, and perhaps the Moriquendi of Mirkwood, they would have been ignorant of the features of the silmarils. They would have been unable to identify it, and too stubborn (or protective) to ask one of the few noldor to give their opinion.
Although the kin of Feanor and his fateful oath had all been spent, If it was a silmaril I doubt it would have been “safe” for the dwarves to keep it.
Anyway, I just enjoy huge speculation, even if bending over backwards 😀
Psst. As Arathaert’s kinleader, I cheat, and call him “Ara”…
*whistles nonchalantly*
The bug that was fixed for the warden legendary items having doubled legacies wasn’t letting you slot 2 of the same legacies. It was just doubling the value of the benefits each legacy on your main-hand gave. And I don’t know exactly what triggered it, I just observed that every once in a while, I would log in and have doubled legacies. I never did anything special or out of the way to achieve this, it kind of just happened randomly at log in. And it is NOT the same bug that let people have ~80k+ morale. That bug is an actual exploit of people changing game files (don’t know how – never tried/wanted to). However, due to the way that the scaling system works in the moors, you can get ~40k morale completely legitimately if you enter the moors at level 85 (in good gear).
Details I forgot to add about the legacy doubling bug:
-It only occurred if you used a sword as your main-hand
-A (much) lesser known bug even tripled the values if you used a club as your main-hand.
Sadly, you cannot enter Moria from the east as a chicken. This has been tested…
