How should the battle at Pelennor Fields be depicted?

Note: By ‘Landscape Events’ I am referring to something like World Events in Guild Wars 2 or Rifts in Rift.

  1. This poll is lacking a poll. Or most anything else. I suspect an html error of some kind?

Where is the box for anything but epic battles?:P

I went with the ‘other’ option, because I would like to see a combination of an instance, an epic battle, and a session play. And let’s not forget those epic cinematic story clips!

  4. Pls no more BigBattles… Go back to the traditional instance clusters

    • I’m very much in agreement with Alex. I think Turbine is of the belief that we enjoy the big battles. I and those I group with a lot are sick of them. We run them frequently because they are the best (often only) source of much of the best gear in the game. Turbine then looks and sees that people run them a lot, and conclude that we enjoy them a lot, and make another. Meanwhile, players (the ones I know, at any rate) would much rather return to traditional instance clusters that include multi-lock raids. I’ve nearly given up on hoping that they will understand this. Are there others here who feel the same as I do (and, I’m assuming Alex does)?

      • I SOOOOOOOOOOOO agree. I enjoy questing, NEVER do BB. I don’t care for gear so I don’t have to do them, but like scoed sais, I know a lotta players that do them just for the gear, NOT because they like them.

I have heard from someone I grouped with (yes, not very reliable, but something) that Turbine is planning on not making any more EB’s for Minas Tirith.

I personally don’t mind them, but I don’t want them to be so heavily enforced as what you need to do. I agree with you, but I still think it’s a good system. In terms of story telling, it can be quite good, and the interaction with things like Ballistae and Catapults are very nice.

I think it’ll be a shame if they have no EB’s for Minas Tirith, as that seems like it would be the most ideal and fitting place to do it. But I do want a mixture of many things for Minas Tirith’s story.

I could see them dropping the system though, especially if they keep the level cap at 100 for forever, since the rewards are already in, so adding more instances are honestly, more work for no gain, in the eyes of the players. And if they see no gain, why do it. So they’ll either need to make new loot, revamp some part of the reward system (again) or they could just drop it and do other stuff. We’ll see. Hopefully they will figure out a good mixture that will be popular with as many people as possible, as this may be some of the last epic story-based instance-type content.

  5. I voted for landscape events. I mean… regular quests. I don’t play Guild Wars or Rift, so glad you tell me, but I don’t know what you mean by that.

I said Landscape Events cause that would be fun I think. But I also think it should be supplemented just as Helm’s Deep was, with Epic Battles and Solo Instances/Session Plays. That combination could probably result in the best situation. But why I said the Landscape Events is because if they could do kinda like GW2 and have events where assaults are made and must be fended off might be cool. That might be best for another version of the map, like Helm’s Deep has, but it could be cool, and dailies and quests could out there. Bosses could spawn and scale to the number of players, there could be capture points like in Forochel and Annuminas, and they could even potentially make it a PvMP open-world zone… I wouldn’t be objected to that as long as they gave us real incentive to do constantly do the events there (good loot and so on).

  7. They really need to make something inspiring for these moments, that captures the spirit of middle earth and has great gameplay as well as fitting the story. Whilst BB might fit the story they lacked the first two criteria. I really want to be blown away. I hope they can pull it off.

Let me lead the charge of the Rohirrim and run headlong into the orc horde trampling them as I go. Culminating into a 24 man raid against oliphants followed up with a session play where I get to be Eowyn and kill the witch king.

  9. I think a little bit of everything(minus maybe the fishing 😉 ) would be a good way to represent the battle that decided that fate of Middle Earth.

Eh I chose Epic battles I actually enjoy them :P.
I’d also be ok with instances as long as it includes 3 mans as I’m generally not very interested in anything bigger.
Or make some epic landscape stuff except I have no clue how that would look like.

  11. Some epic, and landscape too

  12. While I am rather indifferent about Epic Battles, after reading the question that states how *should* they be implemented, I’d probably go with EBs. I see this as the most logical way to display Pelennor, now that we’re in the thick of some of the major battles of this Age (and the likely reason for designing this system in the first place).

In the case of the HD EBs, we’ve seen that Turbine can design them in such a way that we’re just another pleb in the mix of soldiers, and there is only one outcome (assuming the lore-driven fellers are not slain). As such, EBs would let us experience the story, without directly interfering with the main successes of the battle (RIP Witchy).

I suppose the alternative would be a beastly session play (or grouping of session plays, to hit all of the battle’s major points). If this were the case, I’d like to see more rounded-out session play characters, who have more than 1-3 skills.

  13. I think it almost has to be EB’s with the way they have the system setup now. That doesn’t make me overly sad, but not ecstatic either. My true wish is that we’ll have a EB where we ride war steeds with the Rohirrim for the charge.

  14. Pellenor Fields is a tough one: Ideally, it would be a Mounted Combat Epic-Scale Battle that occurred in an instanced fashion.

So, a totally new mechanic I guess.

If we don’t participate in the Ride of the Rohirrim I will be quite discouraged (even though I dislike Mounted Combat more than any other system in the game). It is an essential part of the books, the BEST part of the films, and what really turned the tide in the War of the Ring.

I also don’t want to see it as “after-the-fact” session play. I don’t want to pretend to be a random, anonymous Rohirrim during the ride. I want to be my half-naked, cake-hat wearing dwarf on his flaming PINK warsteed! Or even better… a war-goat or war-pig! Because that is lore-appropriate ;P

    Eirlog Out!
