I have always liked the concept of Epic Battles but the system has never really lived up to my hopes. There was no real purpose as the fights never truly ended. While this does kind of fit the lore of Helm’s Deep, it does not make for fun gameplay.
With Update 15, an offensive Epic Battle is introduced to LOTRO for the first time. Retaking Pelargir is the shot in the arm the Epic Battles system needs. It gives purpose to the system and has a clear and satisfying ending. While the new system still needs a lot of polish before it will be ready for release, the core of the battle feels far more satisfying than the battles of Helm’s Deep.
From the video it looks like a hybrid between traditional Epic Battles and Skirmishes, not sure how I feel about that. Fingers crossed that it borrows the best elements from both.
