All players, upon reaching level 5, may opt to purchase the riding skill from the LotRO store for 95 Turbine Points (TP).  Riding bundles are offered, however all the horses in the bundles are available from Hengstacer Farms for in-game currency.  Turbine Points (TP) equates to real money.

VIP members (those you pay a subscription fee), upon reaching level 20, speak to Éogar, the horse master at Hengstacer Farms, Horsefields, Bree-Land, and will receive the quest “Proving Your Quality”.  This is a short race quest which you must complete within a certain time frame.  Before a VIP reaches level 20, they may see Eogar and purchase a Bree Starter Steed for 200 silver.  If you accept this quest and run the course successfully, you demonstrate to Éogar that you can handle a mount, receive the riding skill and you are done!

After you learn to ride, whether that is by purchasing or earning the Riding Skill, you may purchase your first horse at the cost of 500 silver.  After this purchase Éogar awards you a trait that will offer a 60% discount on all future common horse purchases from Hengstacer Farms in Breeland.

Prices drop to 200 silver for standard horses, and 80 silver for the Breeland Starter horse!  The Grey Steed that is available for purchase is only accessible after you have completed the Epic Quest ‘Book 15, Chapter 12: One Hope Remains.

If you’ve decided you’re an alt-o-holic already, you might want to buy the Samwise-Gamgee starter pack ($9.99) in the LOTRO Market for an account wide version of the riding trait, or wait to see how the Prices for the new ‘Apprentice’ and ‘Journeymen’ Riding Traits work out for 11.2 =)

Isn’t the gating item that you’re out of the intro? I’ve had some toons that due to xp accelerators were level 5 or higher while still in the intro but couldn’t buy the mount skill. Or maybe I just did something stupid. You may want to double check this one – and I will, too. I haven’t rolled an alt in a couple months, but I distinctly recall being level 7 but not being able to buy. (Also, I haven’t checked in game yet, but Google agrees with me, with lotro-wiki and other sites saying that it’s available when you get the “Novice” passive skill from completing the intro, not a level requirement.)

    • Hey there. Ok, so you may buy the riding skill from the Lotro Store at Level 5. You do have to be out of the intro however, and most people leave the Introduction from between Level 6 and level 8. Unless they have bought Turbine Points, they won’t have enough to buy the riding skill. A horse whistle is given to yo in the gift pack you receive in the mail after exiting the Intro. You can use this for 24 hours to summon a horse to ride without needing the riding skill. You also get the novice passive skill when you leave the Introduction as well. The horse you receive is a slow horse and once the 24 hours is up you will be given a quest to speak to Eogar.

So technically, if you have the riding skill, and apart from the temporary horse, you can purchase and ride a horse at level 5 and N00b, you are correct that you have to be out of the Introduction. I have transferred the information across from Steeds of Middle Earth and should have also checked that they had that information and not assumed that players would realise that until they are out of the Introduction, skills etc cannot be earnt or bought except for their training in the introduction. I hope that makes sense 🙂

      Have fun.

How do you get faster horses? Do you have to get a more advanced riding skill?
