Character Revamp Upcoming With Mordor?

A day after announcing the surprise move to Standing Stones Games
Executive Producer Severlin was busy on the forums answering some questions and let this bomb shell drop

What if I let it slip that we are looking at substantial avatar revamps for the Mordor expansion?

I think we can all agree that prospect can be both exciting and scary. Avatar preference is super subjective, and even some of the best received game revamps have a percentage of players who prefer the old look. We are looking at providing an option to use the old avatars so we are not forcing players to use newly updated models and animations if they don’t want to.

Having two avatar paths then becomes a design challenge if we add new hairs or facial options; the old avatars wouldn’t have an equivalent option.

These are the types of design and art challenges we are wrestling with as we work on the expansion.

Well then, we all know how well that worked last time with the hobbit changes they had to roll back after outcry, so what do you think?

  1. That would be really awesome! :O

    Meh

  3. Not even sure what they mean. Updated texturen orso?

  4. other things need fixing and redoing never mind revamping chars.

  5. Interesting, but I would prefer a focus on lag and other performance issues.

He did talk about the lag, later in the thread

Lag continues to be a priority. As an example, we just had a rework of the client side effect system to fix lag associated with singular creatures with stacked effects.

The key thing we need from players when talking about lag is specifics on where and how they are seeing problems. It is extremely problematic for us to take action on vague declarations. The more specific the report, the more we have to track it down.

This sounds a bit passive aggressive to me. I would bet they have years and years of feedback about lag. They need to play their own game where lag affects game play the most, raids and PvMP.

  6. 1. Characters look rather bad for 2016, specially faces and those terrible “blobs in place of ears”. Hairs are also rather outdated
    2. More ways to customize your character would be nice. New hairdress and other features.
    3. Alas more sophisticated characters will make it harder to get good performance.

So I just wait and see what will happen. One thing is sure. Lotro needs many revamps to stay comeptitive on current market. It is rather impossible to see huge changes in the old content, but new content should have many improvements in almost all elements (graphics, questlines (like removal of fetch quests), animations, dynamic of fights).

Lotro has awsome lore to its disposal. I hope new developer will make the game great again and will be able to make new content much more modern (in terms of games technology đŸ™‚ ).

So while I see the potential landmines, I love this news. Lotro’s landscape is so beautiful, but our character models betray the game’s age. A refresh would make the whole game seem more modern.

I would be fine with updated avatars if we have the option to keep the old ones, that way it’s the best of both worlds. I do hope they take a ton of player feedback before comiting to anything

  10. With regards to lag, get on the warhorse and ride around Rohan, very laggy and jumpy.

Run around doing the quests in Minas Tirith and then we can talk about lag…
