Turbine has been alluding to this change for a long time, as far back as 2012 with references to ‘speeding up the transfer process’. Now they have finally achieved their goal.
From today character transfers, for both Freeps and Creeps, will be completely automated. You will be able to purchase ‘Transfer Tokens’, which are applied to your account to be used at your leisure. They can be purchased via the LOTRO Market here, with three different payment options:
- One Token – $24.95
- Three Tokens – $65.95
- Six Tokens -$134.95
Transfers will now be carried out much faster as a result. However, in the very near future transfers paid with Turbine Points will be discontinued. There will be a very short period where you can still pay with TP via the support website.Additionally, transfers between former US and EU servers are still unavailable due to technical issues mentioned on numerous occasions.

Seems very expensive for an automated process. Guess they’re still trying to discourage transfers, but now if you’re dead-set on transferring, at least it will quicker?
I would advise anyone to transfer now if the want to use TP. It’s a shame they will stop players being able to use this method to pay to transfer.

I think that if the community (i.e., the 3 other people I hang with) on Riddermark ever deteriorates to the point of me not wanting to play there anymore – I’ll just reroll similar characters on Landy and spend some quality time leveling them.
Looks to be a cash grab…. hopefully they reconsider and allow TP transfers again in the future.
I’m not sure what to make of the phrase cash grab. It seems to imply a moral judgment. Somewhere between greed and generosity lies a morally neutral legitimate business decision. I’m not quite sure where on the spectrum this service lies.
Blizzard has been charging $25 for self-service character transfers for nearly 8 years now. Has it been engaging in an 8-year cash grab this whole time?
Turbine has been actively developing this functionality for nearly a year now, since last year’s disastrous accounting system upgrade. There must be ongoing costs to monitor, maintain, and support this service, too. Who’s to say $25 isn’t a reasonable price to cover these costs?
It seems like a lot to me, too. But perhaps if this service proves to be reliable and popular, the price will come down in the future.
I have no clue what the cost of running such a service is.
But WOW had automated character transfers for years and it’s still 25$. So the price isn’t too shocking to me.
I’d willingly pay it if they’d let me move EU -> US, sigh.

But yeah the price is crazy high, totally not worth it. Make a new char and enjoy leveling it. These days leveling is the best part of the game
