Ten Ton Hammer Reviews Helm’s Deep

Ten Ton Hammer released their review score for Helm’s Deep, giving it a score of 90/100.

The review listed their Pros and Cons of the expansion.

Pros:

  • Epic battles are epic
  • Convenient spec-swapping is convenient
  • Beautiful West Rohan is beautiful

Cons:

  • Musical score is a step backwards from last year’s expansion
  • Aggressive monetization robs this expansion of overall value
  • Would have preferred more multi-player Big Battles

Conclusion

If you’re a fan of the Lord of the Rings – books, movies or game – you’re going to want Helm’s Deep. In terms of the story, it’s one of the major stepping stones on the path to Mordor, an iconic place and time where heroes make a grim stand against overwhelming odds and prevail, but at a great cost. In terms of a game expansion, the costs are also high, but LotRO still stands strong and proud, and continues to deliver to its dedicated player base.

The LOTRO Players News podcast will be reviewing Helm’s Deep in a few weeks once players and hosts have had enough time to make their way through all the content.

I can’t really disagree with this revue at all. I will say though that imho the actual storylines in the quests (both the regular quests and the epics) all are extremely relative to the situation going on at the time in rohan. I thought the storylines were extremely well done for the most part, very immersive.

  2. Agreed on all points. Gunky’s value analysis of F2P is a little off, but on the whole he is correct. Trying to squeeze more money out of an aging game without creating additional value is like increasing taxes in a city with a declining population. I like the new trait trees, but that’s more of a lateral move; sure it gives the game room to grow, but it doesn’t add any value in and of itself. I like the Big Battles… but it seems odd that Turbine has staked so much on this aspect of the expansion, when they recognize that a huge portion of their player-base is composed of casual players. I like the game, but I hope it doesn’t get canned before we get to the “end of the story”.

I think as long as Turbine stays true to Tolkien, the game will continue with supportive players because it is a more casual audience.
